Eric was living in Gallantin with his mother and step-father, when he enlisted in the Marines 3 June 1968, at a recruiting office in Nashville.
Arriving in Vietnam 1 December 1968, Eric was assigned to India Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. India Company was on a patrol, when the Marines were ambushed by hostile forces, 2 kilometers northeast of Fire Support Base Tomahawk and 18 kilometers southwest of the Ha Tan Airfield. Eric died as a result of a gunshot wound to the neck area from hostile rifle fire.
Survived by his step-father and mother, Roy A and Betty J Burgett and his sister; Janet Marie Duffer, all of 210 Electra Drive, Gallantin, TN and his father; Jack R Duffer of Box 154, Henderson, TN.
