Henderson, TX - On the morning of October 22, 2018, our much beloved Jewell Humphries went home to his Savior following a brief illness.

Jewell was born on September 8, 1928 in Hope, AR to Will and Grace Humphries. His family and friends hosted several gatherings in September to celebrate his 90th birthday, unaware that this precious time would be the last celebration with him. They are grateful for the many memories, but especially those joyful birthday times with Jewell.

Jewell was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Truman Humphries; and sisters, Josephine Proctor and Geneva Dodez.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shelby Jean Fain Humphries and three sons, Bryan Humphries and wife Linda of Conroe, TX, Randall Humphries of Shreveport, LA, and Stan Humphries and wife Connie of Monroe, LA. He is also survived by two brothers, Tommy Humphries of Houston, TX and Don Humphries of Shreveport. Also left to cherish his memories are his seven grandchildren. Jewell also had six great-grandchildren that are part of his cherished family.

Jewell graduated from C.E. Byrd High School and attended Centenary College and LA Tech University and played football at all three of the schools.

In 1947, Jewell enlisted in the U.S. Marine Reserves and served in the Korean War as a Sergeant-Mortal unit Leader from 1950 to 1951 and was Honorably Discharged in February 1953.

He had several employments in the home construction business, operated Buttons and Bows Day Care in Shreveport for several years and completed his many years of employment with Holiday Retirement Group where he and his wife were regional managers.

Jewell loved participating and watching all sports, camping, tailgating, boating, traveling, but for the last 10 years after retirement, he loved being on the deck of his home on Long Glade Lake in Henderson, TX. He led a full, active life through his 90 years. The family is grateful for the time God gave them with him and grateful to The Hospice of East Texas in Tyler, TX for their care during his brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 26, 2018 at Rose-Neath Southside Chapel with Rev. Billy Crosby officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Park West Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Honoring Jewell as pallbearers will be Gary Lash, Austin Lash, Tyler Lash, Monte Griffin, Steve Reeve, and Jonathan Humphries.
