The daughter of Lonnie and Janie Strickland, Jo was born August 4, 1931 in Tabor City, North Carolina. Raised in the Carolina’s, as a young woman, Jo first met John Scott while she was working as a restaurant server. The two were married July 31, 1948 in Covington, Kentucky. It cost $5 for a blood test, and $5 apiece for witnesses. That left $5 for Jo and John to spend on themselves. They may have not had much, but that had each other and that was more than enough. Jo and John lived in Hamilton, Ohio until moving to the Mansfield area in 1956 where they raised their three sons. During this time Jo worked at O’Neil’s Department Store. In 1982, following John’s retirement, the two moved back to the warm sunshine of South Carolina. After living nearly 30 years in South Carolina, Jo and John moved to Ohio to be closer to family.
She enjoyed dining out, cleaning houses, and loved to travel. Jo and John were inseparable and together vacationed to Hawaii, and took Caribbean and Alaskan Cruises. Leaving a legacy of commitment, love, and devotion Jo and John shared a life of 70 years of marriage. She will be remembered for her outgoing spirit, and orneriness. Not only devoted to her husband and children, grandma “JoJo” deeply loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In 1954 Jo accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. She had attended Faith Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband John Scott of Mansfield; children Don (Jan) Scott of Petaluma, California, Rick “Pete” (Patti) Scott of Bellville, and Kevin Scott of Mt. Vernon; grandchildren Jessica (Benji) Mills, Michele “Micki” (Nick) Mealey, Jon Scott, Joe (McKenzie) Scott, and Jennifer “Jenny” Scott; four great grandchildren Chloe Mealey, Dylan Mills, Dayton Mealey and Evan Mills.
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law Diane Scott, sisters Molly, Mary, and Edna, brother David.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 12 pm in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens. Pastor Doug Forsythe will officiate. The Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home is assisting the Scott family with services.
