Pfc. Matthew Alan Cox, 19, Leon, IA, died October 17, 2018, at Cable Beach, Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was born July 28, 1999, Des Moines, IA to Jason Fredrick and Beth Ann Cox.

Matt is survived by his parents, Jason & Beth Cox, brothers, Justin (Sydney), Aaron, and Mark, nephew Jaxson, grandparents, Fred & Linda Cox, Robert & Janet Bricker, and great grandmother, Eloise Cox.

Matthew was a soldier and farmer. When not deployed with the 186th Military Police Company, Iowa Army National Guard, Camp Dodge, Johnston, IA, he farmed with his grandfather, Fred, on the Cox Family Farm in Decatur County, IA.

Matt accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior at an early age, growing up sharing God’s free gift of salvation. He helped in the children’s ministries at First Baptist Church of Urbandale with transportation, singing, and sharing. He had been a helper in his neighborhood along with his brothers doing for others: mowing, shoveling snow, and odd jobs. Matthew’s positive attitude encouraged and helped those he knew.

A funeral service will be 10am, Friday, October 26, 2018, First Baptist Church (originally Urbandale), 3020 E. 38th Street, Des Moines, IA 50317. Burial will follow with full military honors at 1:30pm, Decatur Cemetery, Decatur City, IA 50067. The family will greet friends Thursday from 5 to 8pm at the church in Des Moines.
