Mary and Andrew were married in North Carolina in 1828 and they had eight children, Jemima, Daniel, Nathan, William, Sarah, Andrew, James and John.
The Cathey family moved to California in 1852 from Fort Smith, Arkansas by wagon train. During their voyage they came across the Oatman family almost all of which were killed by Indians, a town in Arizona is named in honor of one of the survivors.
The town of Cathey's Valley is named in honor of Polly's husband Andrew.

Mrs. Mary M. Cathey died at her home in Cathey's Valley, Mariposa County, June 15th, 1892, at the ripe old age of 79 years. The deceased came to this county with her husband, Andrew Cathey and their family, consisting of six sons and two daughters, and in 1854 settled in the beautiful valley that has been named after them. Her husband was called to his Heavenly house some years since. Mrs. Cathey has been in failing health for several years and required personal attendance all the time, which was rendered her by loving relatives. Mother Cathey was a good wife, mother and friend in everything, which goes to make a noble women. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Benj. Wills and Mrs. J. Thompson, and five sons, N. L., Dan, William, A. McC., and James N., besides a large number of grand and great grandchildren. The funeral took place on Thursday and was largely attended. June 19, 1892 Mariposa Gazette
