Per Federal Census records, Fred was the sixth of eight children (siblings: Raymond Martin, Clifford W,, Bertha Mae, Floyd Miles, Phoebe Julia, Harriet Vivian & Janet Louise ) born to Fred Lee & Harriett "Hattie" E. (Gary) Ashley.

He enlisted in the US Army in Boise, Idaho on 16 January 1943.

Following "BIO" elements were adapted (w/edits) from a Patriot Guard Rider's Mission announcement: "On May 4th 1945, PFC Fred Ashley was reported MIA while on a reconnaissance mission in former Czechoslovakia. He was mortally wounded. The last time any American saw him German troops were taking him away.

"Shortly after WW-II, Ashley's family received a letter saying local civilians had discovered Ashley's grave site in Czechoslovakia. An examination done years later showed those remains were Flight Officer Richard Lane. The military was under the impression that Lane was buried in Nebraska with full Military Honors.

"After analysis were completed last summer, it was resolved that it was Ashley's remains, so now Ashley is being sent to his home town of Emmett, Idaho."

"He was laid to rest with full military honors on 20 October 2018."
