Daniel J. Saunders, 83, of Fall River died peacefully at his home on Sunday, October 21, 2018, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with Leukemia. He was born in New Bedford on October 20, 1935, son of the late Captain Herman R. and Matilda (O'Reilly) Saunders.

He was a graduate of Monsignor Coyle High School, Class of 1953. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he was stationed at Fort McNair in Washington, D.C., and served as a member of the Presidential Honor Guard for Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Daniel earned a Bachelor's Degree in History from Stonehill College and a Master's Degree from Bridgewater State College.

He was employed as an English teacher at Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School for many years before becoming the Superintendent of Bristol-Plymouth Regional Vocational High School in Taunton where he worked until his retirement in 1993. He was a strong advocate of vocational education and students with special needs.

Daniel was known for his kind-hearted spirit and generosity he showed to others, never expecting anything in return. He found joy in working in his gardens and tending to his yard. Each year, he would plant hundreds of flowers in his greenhouse and would give most of them away to family, friends and neighbors. Family meant the world to him. Every Sunday, for the past 25 years, his children and their families would gather at his house to enjoy a home cooked meal. He was an avid Boston Red Sox and Notre Dame football fan.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years, Jean (Guilmette) Saunders; six children, Mariann Walsh, Joan Shea and her husband Mark, D.J. Saunders, Timothy Saunders and his wife Jennifer, Elizabeth Saunders, and Julia Taradash and her husband Jonathan. He was the proud "Papa" to 15 grandchildren, whom he loved with all his heart - Kate and her husband Aaron, Brendan, Zoe, Daniel, Blaine, Matthew, Andrew, Abigail, Liam, Grace, Matilda, Gwenyth, Mitchell, Oliver, and Camille. He was anxiously awaiting the birth of his first great grandchild, due to arrive next month. He also leaves two sisters, Mary Welch and Joan Liarikos .

He was also the father-in-law of William Anger and the late Steven Walsh.

He was the brother of the late Katherine Sullivan and Herman, Albert, Jack, Paul, Richard, and Thomas Saunders, and the son-in-law of the late Alphonse and Anita Guilmette.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday October 25, 2018 at 10 AM at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 121 Mt. Pleasant St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday October 24, 2018 from 4-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
