Bio/Excerpt from Philadelphia Inquirer

Elmer Soltesz, a seventh and eighth-grade geography teacher in Burlington City High School, New Jersey for 35 years before retiring in June 1994, died Saturday at his Roebling home.

Mr. Soltesz taught Burlington City, New Jersey "children and then their children and grandchildren," recalled Elizabeth Csogi Soltesz, his wife of 37 years. "He loved learning and teaching . . . and related to those 12- and 13-year-olds as few others could."

More than a few of those thousands of students he taught went on to become teachers and educators. Several are now on the staff at Burlington City High School. ''He was very proud of that," his wife said.

Born in Trenton, New Jersey, Mr. Soltesz was a 1951 graduate of the city's Trenton Central High School and went on to study at Trenton State Teachers College, now Trenton State College, where he was manager of the football team. He graduated with a major in geography and a minor in history in 1959 and later returned to earn a Master's Degree at Princeton University in Princeton, NJ.

"He was a terrific teacher," said Allen Miller, a former student and now a Burlington City High School history teacher. "One of the things I remember distinctly from his class was that he loved to keep you guessing. He played with us. He brought something extra" into the classroom.

"It was a big thrill for me" to return as a teacher and get to know him, Miller said. "I found out what a clever and witty man he was."

Judy Burke, a guidance counselor at Burlington City High, said Mr. Soltesz was known for being professional, organized, understanding and flexible. "He served as an inspiration to many present and future teachers," she said.

And, for more than 20 years, Mr. Soltesz directed the Basic Adult Education Evening Classes, which were very much a multicultural program, for the school district, she said.

In keeping with his love for geography, Mr. Soltesz and his wife became world travelers - including several trips to Europe including Hungary - and had been planning a trip to Alaska.

Mr. Soltesz also was a longtime, active member of the Hungarian Reformed Church in Roebling, New Jersey where he was Vice Chief Elder at the time of his death. He was a member of the Hungarian American Civic Association and the Benelovent Protective Order of the Elks in Bordentown, as well as the National and New Jersey Education Associations.

Mr. Soltesz also was a professional real estate salesperson for Cathy Hutchinson Realty in Florence, New Jersey. He served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957.

Mr. Soltesz is survived by his wife; two sons, Darrell E. Soltesz and Todd N. Soltesz, a daughter, Melanie E. Pielacha, three grandchildren; and two brothers, Andrew of Whiting and Alex of Boynton Beach, Fla.
