Sam was born in Beebe, Arkansas to Millie Truesdale Horton in 1885. His father had passed earlier in the year. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, John A Anderson. Sam married Lucy Smith and moved to Whitewright, where he owned a meat market. Sam and Lucy raised 7 children togetherÃ¢â‚¬"Bessie, Ruby, Edna, Howard, Sam Jr, Jesse, and Frances.
