Maria Magdalena Barba, of Independence, passed away from cancer at the age of 68 on Oct. 10, surrounded by her family in her home. She was born on June 20, 1950, in Edinburg, Texas, to Guadalupe and Paula Alvarez.

Maria married Silvano Barba on July 17, 1971, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Independence, and they had three children.

She loved music, singing and dancing, and her greatest passion was her children and grandkids, and supporting them in sports and life. She was well-known and loved by many at Central High School and throughout the community, and will be dearly missed by all.

Maria is survived by her husband, Silvano Sr.; children Silvano Jr. (Jodeen), of Dallas; Jose Luis (Bridget Weldon), of Monmouth; Aracelia (Jacob Perry), of Independence, and 10 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Jose Luis Alvarez.

Maria is also survived by her sisters, Irma Treviño, Gloria Treviño, Rosie Ramirez, Dora Ledezma, Lucy Canela, and brother Lupe Alvarez Jr., and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was Monday, Oct. 15, 5-8 p.m. at Farnstrom Mortuary, with a rosary at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Oct. 16, 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with an interment following at Hilltop Cemetery, and a reception at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are appreciated to her beloved Central High School Athletics, Attn: Ryan O’Malley, 1530 Monmouth St., Independence, OR 97351.
