Donald Baird Post "007", 83, of Springfield, died at 9:18 a.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2018, at Heritage Health in Springfield. Donald was born on May 18, 1935, in Springfield, the son of Howard S. and Hilda C. Smith Post. He married Ilene Joyce Engel on April 28, 1979, in Springfield.

Donald lived his whole life in Springfield. He graduated from Lawrence Grade School in 1949 and was a 1953 graduate of Springfield High School. In high school, he was crowned Homecoming King, and also served as an escort for Jane Russell at a VFW fundraiser. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in Business Education at Western Illinois State College (now WIU) in 1957 and took additional courses towards his master's degree. He was the first president of the boys dorm (Seal Hall). After completing his education, Donald proudly served his country in the United States Army and eventually retired from the 183rd Illinois Air National Guard with the rank of Master Sergeant. In all, he served 20 years with the military.

Donald also served as a school teacher with District 186 on and off for 31 years. He taught Driver's Ed for six years, taught business classes, and was a lunchroom coordinator for two years. He was also an assistant baseball coach and then head baseball coach at Lanphier for three years. He had attended almost all the City Basketball Tournaments since 1948. Donald ended up teaching at all three high schools and taught one year at Enos Grade School. He was the "jack of all trades" for high school sporting events whether selling tickets, score keeping, umpiring, or whatever needed to be done. Donald retired from Springfield High School and was sometimes called Mr. SHS. He was committed to educating children and making a positive impact on their lives.

Donald also owned and operated his own candy store "Judy Lynn Candies" for 10 years in the downtown area. His love of working with people, candy, and sweets also led to his employment as a field rep for the Dairy Queen company, traveling throughout Central Illinois.

In 1950, he received the Boy Scouts of America Order of the Arrow (an honor member in Local Lodge 132 Boy Scout Troup 13). Donald was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Springfield Jaycees, the Friend in Need program, and the Methodist Men's Club. He was an honored member of the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame, for Friend of Sports in 2008 and in 2001, for being a member of the 1952 American Legion Post 32 Capital City Motors Baseball team. He attended almost all the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame Banquets since 1991. He was also a member of the Springfield Education Association, National Education Association, and Illinois Education Association.

He enjoyed bowling which is where he met his wife, Ilene, when his bowling team bowled next to her team. He loved watching over and over all of the James Bond movies, especially those with Sean Connery. Donald always enjoyed being called "007" and had it put by his name at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum as well as on a brick by Union Station.

Donald will be greatly missed by those who loved him. He is survived by his wife, Ilene Post of Springfield; sons, David Post of Springfield and Darren (wife, Sally) Post of Rochester; daughter, Jody Post (fiancé, Tim Baran) of Las Vegas, NV; grandchildren, Rebecca Post of Springfield, Dylan Post (girlfriend, Brittany Davis) of Taylorville; great-grandchild, Khloe Post of Taylorville; sister-in-law, Sharon Post; nephew, Kevin Post of Springfield; niece, Karon (husband, Bill) Kaltenbach of Parker, CO; and great-nephew and niece, Alex and Gabrielle Kaltenbach of Parker, CO.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gordon D. Post.
