James Harvey McCall was born in that part of Lincoln County which became Gaston in 1846, the family residing in the area around Goshen Church, near present day Mt Holly. James's father was John McCall (b abt 1816 Lincoln Co - d bef 1870 Mecklenburg); his mother was Mary "Polly" Brotherton (b abt 1815 Lincoln Co - d bef 1850 Gaston Co). John and Polly were married 5 Jan 1839 in Lincoln Co. John McCall had a first cousin named James Harvey McCall, and it would seem likely that our James was named after him.

John was the son of Archibald McCall (b abt 1782 Lincoln Co - d aft 1860 Gaston Co) and Nancy Allison (b abt 1785 - d aft 1840).
Sometime after 1850 John McCall and second wife Ann Howard moved to Paw Creek township in Mecklenburg County, along with his brother James A McCall and wife Martha Patsy Fite.

James enlisted in the Confederate Army on the 30th of September 1861, the same day as his brother George Alexander McCall in Company G, North Carolina 34th Infantry Regiment "Mecklenburg Boys". The military information on his tombstone is incorrect, something not uncommon. While enlisted, he was captured and was taken prisoner of war in the notorious Point Lookout camp in Maryland, but unlike so many of his comrades, he managed to survive this ordeal.

He first married Martha Jane Cox in about 1866 ( b abt 1844 Mecklenburg Co - d abt 1873 Mecklenburg Co) who bore him three children.
He then wed Ellen Amelia Lawing (b 1853 Mecklenburg - d 1947 Mecklenburg) on 24 Sep 1876 in Mecklenburg Co, who bore him six children.

In the 1870s, he purchased land in Paw Creek Township, in the same general vicinity where his father and step-mother had lived the decade before, around the Old Plank Road, where he resided until his untimely and tragic death in 1898.

As a side note, James and Martha Jane's daughter Laura Jane McCall married John Andrew Lawing, Lawing being the younger brother of Ellen Lawing, James's second wife. Therefore, Laura Jane was both sister-in-law and step-daughter to Ellen, and Ellen was mother-in-law to her own brother John.
