Vera O. Himes Member of the First UMC, Orbisonia

Vera O. Himes, 88, of Orbisonia went to be with her Heavenly Father Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at the Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College. She had put up a determined battle with failing health over the past two and a half years before succumbing to heart failure.

Born Sept. 7, 1923, in her family home in Orbisonia, she was the daughter of the late Olive G. (Black) Sellers and Newville Sellers. She was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Robert W. “Mike” Himes Dec. 27, 1946, in the Valley Forge Chapel, Valley Forge. Mr. Himes preceded her in death July 19. 1998.

Mrs. Himes is survived by two daughters, Roberta Barben of McConnellstown and Lisa Caspar and her husband, Bob, of Sykesville, Md., three grandchildren, Cole Barben, Emily Barben and Olivia Caspar, and a great-grandchild Lilly. She is also survived by one brother, Norman “Bud” Sellers of Baton Rouge, a.

Mrs. Himes was preceded in death by her brother, Melvin L. Sellers, and her sisters, LaRue G. Dell and Thelma M Miller.

She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Orbisonia from the time she was a little girl. Mrs. Himes served as a youth leader, a Sunday School teacher and also served on several committees of the church.

Mrs. Himes graduated as class valedictorian from the Orbisonia High School and graduated from Shippensburg State College with a degree in secondary education. She first taught in the New Bloomfield area and later returned to her hometown of Orbisonia, where she briefly taught English at the Orbisonia High School. Mrs. Himes then taught junior high English at Mount Union High School for the remainder of her teaching career. In addition, Mr. and Mrs. Himes owned and operated the Himes Jewelry store, first in Orbisonia, and later in Mount Union. After retirement, Mrs. Himes continued teaching for the Adult Education Program, which helped people obtain their GED’s.

She enjoyed participating in Friends of the Library meetings and loved her weekly Bible study with friends, gardening and playing with her pets. The focus of her life was her family, and she loved spending time with her grandchildren, and more recently with her great-granddaughter. She particularly enjoyed vacationing with her family at the beach.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 1, at the First United Methodist Church, Orbisonia.

The family will receive friends for viewing from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, and from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, 565 Ridgley St., Orbisonia.
