Shortly after their marriage, the Marlin family moved to Wyoming, Stark County, Illinois where their first child Ella Jane was born. John and Melissa had four known children: Ella Jane (1858-1894), Elizabeth (1864-1942), John D, Jr. (1870-1921), and William K. (1872-Ukn).
By 1870 the family was living in Harlan, Page County, Iowa and would remain here until about 1900 when they moved to Nodaway and then on to Clarinda. John, Melissa's husband, died in Minnesota but was returned to Iowa for burial. Melissa's place of death is in dispute. Some researchers indicate it was Missouri; while others have Oklahoma. Not death record has been located for either state. She is buried with John in the Clarinda Cemetery.
