Albert Miles Van Houweling, the son of Melvin and Mae Van Houweling, was born March 3, 1928 in Pella, Iowa. He graduated from Pella High School, and was known for being a jazz trumpeter and his nickname, “Nooke.”

Following high school, he served in the United States Army and was stationed in the Phillipines.

Al graduated from Drake University’s Pharmacy School in 1953,

the year he also married Genevieve Casey. They enjoyed dancing at area dance clubs and bars.

Al owned and operated a pharmacy in Oak Park, and finished his career working for Dahl’s.

He enjoyed cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes, Drake Bulldogs, and Kansas City Chiefs football teams, golfing, and swimming. Al raised German shorthair dogs and liked pheasant hunting. He liked music of all kinds, classic movies, and was a ham radio operator.

Al was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

He is lovingly remembered by his children, Steve (Judi) Van Houweling and Candy (Michael) Anderson; grandson, Greg Van Houweling (Steph Gross); and many friends made along the way.

A memorial visitation will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, at Merle Hay Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m.
