Joanne K. McCoy age 84 of 356 Cedar St. Ishpeming passed away Tuesday October 16, 2018 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming while in the loving care of her family, UP Home Health and Hospice and staff at MCMCF.
Joanne was born July 2, 1934 in Houghton to George and Elma (Mackey) Freeman. She graduated from Negaunee High School. Joanne was assistant display advertising manager and graphics artist at a chain of weekly newspapers in the Detroit area and designed the Art-Van logo while employed there. She was also assistant advertising manager and graphic artist for a chain of hardware stores in the Detroit area. Joanne was called grandma by the neighborhood kids on Cedar St. where she lived in Ishpeming.
After moving to the U.P. she attended N.M.U. Joanne has represented paintings at the Michigamme Moonshine Gallery and various local exhibits. Her art works are displayed at the Magnuson Hotel in Ishpeming and various private residents including downstate Michigan and the Seattle area.
Joanne was owner of the former Hanger Clothing Store in Ishpeming and an Avon sales representative. She enjoyed spending time at camp on Lake Arfelin.
Joanne is survived by 5 children: Roger McCoy of Ishpeming, Steven (Julie) McCoy of Ishpeming, Vicki (Bill) Bennon of Diorite, Catherine (Paul) Sirchia of Hermansville, MI, and Robert (fiancée Renee) McCoy of Federal Way, WA, a brother George (Alice) Freeman of Kentucky, 9 grandchildren: Steven J. (Missy) McCoy, Lance McCoy, Sean (Trish) Bennon, Jolene (Tim) Beaumont, Charity (Dan) Mason, Michelle (Wayne) Morrow, Jennifer (Christopher) Goodall, Kris (Ryan) Tunteri and Paul ( Dr. Sheila Wang) Oien, 12 great grandchildren: Madisyn, Jordan, Colin, Lilia, Ella, Breanna, Addie, Kaleb, Tyler, Odin, Coraline and Holden, a brother in law William (Claire) McCoy, special friends Gail Mehan and Susan Douglas along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband James McCoy in 2010.
Joanne’s family will greet relatives and friends from 2:00-4:00pm on Sunday October 21, 2018 at the Bjork and Zhulkie Funeral Home where funeral services will be held at 4:00 pm with Pastor Steven J. Solberg officiating.
Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
