Azariah Root was the son of Col Azariah Root and Eleanor/Nelly Barber. Col Root was a Revolutionary War patriot, as was Col Root's father.

Azariah was the Adair Co judge in 1861 and re-elected in 1863. He fought in the War of 1812. He was the Postmaster during the Civil War.

Azariah Root was one of the early settlers of the county, together with his son, Abner. In 1853 he made a settlement upon section 11, in Jackson Township, where he resided for some time; then he removed to section 12, and later to the Village of Fontanelle.
