Abner was the son of Azariah Root and Myra Skeeles. He moved with his parents to Wyandotte County, Ohio, in 1839, where he remained until 1852, when he came to Madison County, Iowa. In 1853 the family settled in Adair County, Iowa, where his father built a log-cabin, and later built a frame house.

Abner married Martha Wilson in Adair County in April 1861. They had two children: Etta and Cora.

Abner was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted as a Private in Adair County on 3 Dec 1863, at the age of 35 years. Mustered in Co I 4th Iowa Cavalry on 3 Dec 1863. Mustered out with his company on 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia. Abner was wounded in action (hand, slight wound) on 23 Oct 1864 at Big Blue, Missouri. He was with Sherman through Mississippi, and at the battle of Guntown, in the great Price raid, and in many other engagements.

Abner's wife, Martha, died in 1869. In May 1870 he married Arminda Decker and they had two children: Clara and Ernest.

Abner farmed over 160 acres and owned an orchard with about one hundred bearing trees. He was the first sheriff of Adair County, served as township assessor, and was a member of the school board. He was a member of the Fontanelle Lodge #138 and a member of G.A.R. Lentz Post.
