Mrs. Smith, born in Harnett County, NC; was the daughter of the late, James Smith and Dinah Cameron Smith. She was also preceded in death by five sisters, Flora Brown, Odessa Bailey, Todie Winfield, Lillie Amerson and Blanche McNeil; five brothers, Ferman Smith, Alex Smith, Pastor Smith, Charles Smith and James Bailey; and a son-in-law, Abraham Bowens.
She received her education in Harnett County Public Schools. She relocated to Raleigh, NC. where she was joined in Holy matrimony to Addewey Caviness. A son and daughter were the fruit of this union. She married Edgar Smith in a later period in life.She began her walk of faith by attending a Prayer Band whose mission was to preach, teach, and instruct individuals in God's word with special emphasis towards spiritual conversion and growth. She surrendered her life to Christ in this humble beginning of her spiritual journey.
This Prayer Band grew and after two years God instructed Pastor Lois W. Hinton in December of 1962 to pioneer Mt. Pleasant Holy Church of God, Inc. She became one of it's first charter members. She served n the Usher Board, taught Sunday School classes, served on Missionary Circle Number 2, was the Pastor's Aide President and sang in the choir. She was a good seamstress and sewed robes for the church choirs and made the pulpit and communion tables accessories.
She accepted the call of God to the ministry and preached her initial sermon at Mt. Pleasant and was later ordained as an evangelist. She ministered at various services and conducted revivals throughout the United States, wherein many souls were saved. Evangelist Smith was a firm believer in preaching against sin and sharing the salvation message of "Jesus Christ and Him crucified."
She was President of the Union in the Holy Churches on the Rock Association and pioneered a church located in Richmond, VA. She served as it's pastor for several years.
She is survived by her daughter, Gwendolyn Bowens of Raleigh; her son, Minister Dewey Mitchell Caviness (Toni) of Raleigh; two sisters, Claudia McNeil of Godwin; Catherine Smith (George) of Erwin; a brother, Eddie Bailey of Philadelphia, PA; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.
