Joseph Thomas Frazier was born on August 21, 1916 in Bennettsville, Marlboro County, South Carolina to John Colin Frazier and Lula Mae Gibson Frazier. He was the second oldest child of ten children. The oldest was John "Kunkle" Hampton Frazier. Younger siblings are Sallie Susan Frazier Dew, Pauline Carylee Frazier Rogers, Nora Jane Frazier Pruitt, Noah Lee Frazier, James Frazier, Rosa V/Rosabell Frazier (died in infancy), Emma Louise Frazier Gainey Freeman, David Franklin "Buddy" Frazier and Prentiss Alexander Frazier.

He married Alice Eula Leviner, daughter of Rory/Roy Lee Leviner and Minnie Beulah McLeod sometime around 1938. They had five children, four sons and one daughter. Eldest child, Ernest was stillborn in March 1939. Next born was Leonard Weldon Frazier, Thomas Lee "Tommy" Frazier, Mary Alice Frazier Herndon and youngest child, Billy Darrell Frazier.

JT Frazier died on February 8, 1991 and is interred in Sunset Memorial Park in Bennettsville, South Carolina.
