Charles Joseph Schafer

Spanish Springs - Charles was born in Salinas, California, October 7, 1932 to Rae Borton Schafer and Frank Schafer. He transitioned on Wednesday, October 3, 2018, due to sepsis developed after gallbladder surgery.

Charles attended Alisal High School in Salinas and joined the Navy in 1950, serving during the Korean War. After the Navy,he earned a pilot's license. In 1958 Charles moved to Reno for a construction job and met his future wife, Mry Lee Block.

They were married April 30,1960 and settled in Sparks to raise a family. He has 3 children.

Alyce Schafer from a previous marriage, Cindy Schafer, and Jerry Schafer, who preceded him in death.

Charles is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Lee Schafer, his daughters, Alyce and CindySchafer, his son-in-law, Terry Fowler, and his beloved dog, Daisy Mae. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews and cousins.

Charles was a proud member of the Operating Engineers Local 3, joing in 1952. In January 1992 he was presented with an Honorary Lifetime Membership in Local 3 International Operating Engineers. Charles worked construction for many years to provide for his family.

He liked animals, old movies, watching the news, and working in his yard.

Burial will be at Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley. There will be a celebration of life on Saturday, October 20, at 1:00 at his home in Spanish Springs.
