Virginia Matthews, 95, of Walla Walla passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, surrounded by family members. She had been home bound for several months prior to her death.

This loving couple was married for 68 years. They met at a boarding house in Spokane. Their first date was going to a baseball game. Throughout their long marriage, they continued to go to ball games, several of which were World Series Games. They were great fans of the Seattle Mariners and St. Louis Cardinals.

Virginia retired in 1987 after working for Dr. Quentin Schwenke for 24 years as his receptionist, bookkeeper, and office manager. During her retirement, she enjoyed needlework, photography, keeping scrapbooks, church activities, and travelling. Virginia and Thearn went on several bus tours throughout the United States as well as cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska, and the Gulf of Mexico.

Virginia was a member of Central Christian Church for over 70 years. She served on several church boards and particularly loved her women’s fellowship.

Virginia is survived by sons: Ron Matthews and wife Elaine of Walla Walla, Doug Matthews and wife Bobbie of Eagle Idaho; four grandchildren: Greg Matthews of Clarkston, WA, Becky Drumheller of Walla Walla, Kristi Matthews of Walla Walla, Amy Gonzalez of Star, Idaho; numerous great-grandchildren.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Thearn in 2012.

Affectionately known as “Pooh”, Pooh was known for her wonderful smile, laughter, and love that she shared with all family and friends. Until we hold hands in Paradise, know we love you Pooh, and will miss you every day of our lives!
