Note: Multiple variations for the spelling of Schmeser have been found in historical records.

Information about Amelia and her parents, Andrew and Caroline, was obtained from Amelia's daughter Gladys in a conversation with her around 1975 by McCoy descendant Col. Harold E. Comstock. Gladys said that Andrew and Caroline had emigrated to Australia soon after they were married in Germany in 1846. Enroute to Australia, their wedding presents were all stolen. After Amelia was born in Australia, they moved to San Francisco, presumably for the Gold Rush, where her brother Charles was born in 1853.

Amelia and John McCoy were married in Santa Cruz on 3 December, 1865.

In addition to her siblings linked below, Amelia also had a brother named Charles (Nov 1853 - 19 Dec 1907). He died in Santa Cruz but the location of his burial has not been researched.
