He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He received a B.S. Degree from VA Tech in 1947, and later a M.S. Degree from Montana State University. He served as Assistant Extension Agent in Bland County, County Extension Agent in Grayson County, and as Extension Sheep Specialist in the VA Tech Animal Science Dept. He retired in 1981 after 35 years of service as VA Tech Professor Emeritus of Animal Science.
Special recognition included: The VA Tech Alumni Award, Certificate of Distinguished Service Award from the National County Agents Association, Epsilon Sigma Phi State Distinguished Service Award, American Sheep Industry Leadership Award, the VA Tech Block and Bridle Honor Award, the American Society of Animal Science Award for Distinguished Services to the Nations Livestock Industry, a Fellow in the American Society of Animal Sciences, and a member of the Virginia Livestock Hall of Fame.
He was a member of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church. A member of the VA Tech UT Prosim Society, the Blacksburg Host Lions Club and a Melvin Jones Fellow, Hunters Masonic Lodge, the Wytheville Royal Arch Chapter, and the VA Tech Hokie Club.
