Funeral for Derrick LaShaun Griffin, 37, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, at Whinery-Huddleston Funeral Service.

Mr. Griffin departed this life March 30, 2016, at a Houston, Texas, hospital.

Concluding services and burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Lawton.

Derrick, the second of three children was born Nov. 6, 1978, to retired First Sgt. Felton and Odessa L. Griffin in Frankfurt, Germany. He attended public school in Oklahoma and Texas and graduated from the Dallas Independent School District, Skyline High School in Dallas, Texas. in 1997. Derrick furthered his education by going into the Air Force. Derrick wanted to become a lawyer at an early age so he went on to receive a B.S. Degree in Business Administration in 2011 at the University of Phoenix. In 2012 he entered into the Center for Advanced Legal Studies in Houston, Texas. with a paralegal certificate an ABA approved program.

From 2010 to 2012 he worked with the Harris County Sheriff's Department and became a Correctional Detention Officer and in 2014 Derrick became a Litigation Paralegal with Goforth Easterling LLP. In May of 2014 Derrick went to Mark, Balette and Giessel P.C. and worked as in personal injury (medical malpractice) paralegal. His last employment was with the University of Houston. Derrick's health no longer permitted him to serve in these jobs which he so loved.

Derrick received Christ at an early age and was baptized at New Life Seventh Adventist Church by Pastor Roberts.

Derrick is survived by his father, of Dallas, Texas, and his mother, Odessa Griffin, Lawton; his brothe,r Anthony Maurice Griffin, Bremerton, Wash.; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of supportive friends.

He was preceded in death by his oldest brother, Felton Griffin Jr.; his maternal and paternal grandparents, Delton Linder, Mrs. Geneva Griffin and Phil and Johnnie Mae Tolbert; his uncle, Ernest L. Tolbert; and by his aunt, Jimmy Harris.
