Edward C. Austin, age 92, of Newark, DE, passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2018.
Born in Pennsylvania on August 28, 1926, he was the son of the late Edward B. Austin and Ethel (Neide) Smith. A member of Teamsters Local Union #326, Ed dedicated his career as a truck driver for the former Signal Delivery Co. for over 30 years, retiring in 1981. In 1970, he began a family business, Austin & Pruitt Fire and Safety Equipment in Wilmington, where he worked until his retirement.
Ed was a life member and past Fire Chief for Five Points Fire Company in Wilmington. He was past President of the Delaware Valley Fire Chiefs Association and past President of the Eastern Division of the I.A.F.C. In his spare time, he enjoyed RV camping.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Edward W. Austin; sons-in-law, Dick Pruitt and Bob Loney; and grandson, Christopher Younker. Ed is survived by his former wife, Claire “Peach” Austin of Newark; children, Deborah C. Pruitt of Wilmington, Vicki D. Loney of Galivants Ferry, SC, Donna L. Younker (Robert) of Newark, Gregory J. Austin of Wilmington; daughter-in-law, Susan Austin of New Castle; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5 pm until 7 pm on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at Five Points Fire Company, 209 South Maryland Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19804. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, at Five Points Fire Company. Interment will follow in Longwood Cemetery, 945 East Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square, PA.
