Notre Dame All-Century basketball team member and professional basketball player. Born in Washington, Indiana, he worked for the railroad after graduating from high school to finance his tuition at Notre Dame. Set a team high average in the 1943-44 season with 15.4 points as the Irish finished the season with a 10-9 win/loss record. Served in the Navy during World War II missing the next season but returned to Notre Dame, where he was a forward, to lead the team with a 17.9 point average per game in his senior season which helped set the school record season when the Irish finished with 13-0, a record that still stands. Also set Notre Dame's single-season scoring record in both seasons and was named an All-Star player; also named twice as All American player, one of only seven in Notre Dame's history. Often credited with originating the one-handed shot, crowds came to see him during his professional career when he played for the Indianapolis Katuskys in the National Basketball League from 1946-1948 and the Fort Wayne Pistons from 1948-1950. Retired from basketball and joined Amoco as a sales executive in 1952. In November 2004 he became one of 25 players chosen to the All-Century team and was also inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Cause of death: heart failure, at his residence in Naperville, Illinois.
