Eugene Edward Wormhoudt was born on March 3, 1923, at Pella, Iowa. He was the second of two sons that were born to Alonzo B. (Lon) and Elisabeth C. (De Vries) Wormhoudt. Gene was raised with his brother, Herbert L. Wormhoudt, in a thrifty Dutch household. His father, Lon Wormhoudt, was a retail clothier and a partner in Wormhoudt & Kempkes Clothing Store in Pella which opened in 1916. His father also was one of the founding fathers of the Pella Historical Society and Tulip Time and served as a Deacon at First Reformed Church and as a trustee for Central College.
T
he clothing business kept Gene and his brother, Herb, who later became a medical doctor, busy along with music and church.

During World War II Gene enlisted to serve in the United States Navy as his brother, Herb, did with the United States Army. Gene dangerously crossed the Pacific Ocean on a tank support ship and returned home safely as a Lieutenant.

A little known fact is that at that time Gene was accepted to study architecture at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles where he played on the tennis team.

Upon the untimely death of his father, Lon, he returned to Pella, Iowa to help out in the clothing store and take care of his mother, Bess, which he dutifully did until her death.

Gene continued his education at Central College and graduated with a History Degree. In 1961 Gene became credit manager at the Rolscreen Company in Pella until his retirement in 1984. Following his retirement he chose to live in Mesa, Arizona. While on a trip to Hawaii Gene met Anna Billingsley and late in life they were happily married. Gene and Ann spent the winters in Arizona and the summers in California until her death in 2004. Upon Ann’s death Gene moved back to Pella where he had many friends. A walk down the side walk took forever because he knew almost everybody.

Gene led a modest, Christian lifestyle, devoted to church. While a member of the First Reformed Church, at the age of 16 years, he was active in the choir, and now was a member of the Second Reformed Church. However, his one indulgence was sporty cars, Oldsmobiles, the sportiest models that were offered, the Cutlass or Toronado. He enjoyed long walks around Lake Keomah where he and his brother, Herb, had built a lake home and attending the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.On Wednesday, October 10, 2018, Gene passed away at The Cottages in Pella at the age of 95 years where he had been cared for since July, 2016. Gene always put his family first and happily spoiled his favorite niece, Lisa M. Nicholls, and his favorite nephew, James F. Wormhoudt and their families of Fernandina Beach, Florida. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna; his parents, Alonzo and Elisabeth Wormhoudt; his brother, Dr. Herbert L. Wormhoudt and his wife, Hazel R. (Durden) Wormhoudt.

Gene will be remembered as a caring person and is finally with his Savior!!!

Memorial contributions may be designated for Central College or Second Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa.
