Charles Henry Sumner, 86, retired farmer, a resident of this town 45 years, died Thursday night in Putnam Memorial Hospital, Bennington. He had been hospitalized nearly five weeks. Born in Halifax Aug. 3. 1867, he was a son of Hoyt and Abbie (Kinney) Sumner. He was married in Hoosick, N.Y., March 10, 1898 to Miss Gertrude Burdick, who survives. Besides his wife he leaves three sons, Charles of Hinsdale, N.H.. Arthur of Averill Park. N.Y., and Merritt of this town, and six daughters, Mrs. Rhoda Sage of Cohoes, N.Y., Mrs. Bertha Dixon of Dover, N.H., Mrs. Hattie Russell of Averill Park, Mrs. Edith Galusha of Dalton, Mass., Mrs. Grace Lawrence of Pittsfield, Mass., and Mrs. Ethel Lee of North Adams, Mass. He also leaves 24 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Mr. Sumner was a member of the local camp of the Sons of Union Veterans.
