A young pilot from Jersey City who was killed in action while serving with the British Royal Flying Corps in World War I - and was buried in Jersey City in a grave that did not indicate his military service - finally was given that recognition 5/14/2007 in a ceremony at Holy Name Cemetery. A special graveside service was held for 2nd Lt. Vincent Jerome Flynn, who was killed at age 20 in a training accident in Britain in June 1918. Flynn was originally buried in Britain, but his family reburied him in Holy Name Cemetery in 1922. However, there was no headstone on the grave. Flynn, who trained to be a priest, tried to join the U.S. Army but was not old enough. He then went to England and joined the British Army. He now has a new headstone indicating his military service, with small American and British flags flying on either side. "The Jersey Journal" May 15, 2007.
