Tommye was born to John Bert and Ada Baker on March 13, 1918 in Denton, Texas. She was the sixth of seven daughters, all fourth generation Texans.

Tommye retired from the U.S. Bureau Of Censes after twenty years of service. During her employment she was honored in Washington D.C. with a bronze metal award for her years of excellent service. She was an active participant in the Minnie Miller Garden Club. She loved making flower arrangements, was a national flower show judge and taught basic flower arranging.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Charles Lester ( Bud ) Smith (1917-1996), son Charles Thomas (1944-2006) and daughter Brenda Sue (1953-1953), sisters, Clara Baker Cowan, Sue Baker Neely, Ruby Gunther, Ella Mae Baker Tunnell, Byrtie Baker Adams and Marguarite Baker Gardenhire.
