Glenn Whitmer Thomas, 89, of Roanoke, Va., passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at home surrounded by his family.

He was born in Dayton, Va., on July 6, 1929, to George E. and Wilda Thomas. Besides his parents, Glenn was predeceased by one brother, Leonard Thomas; and three sisters, Mary Lee Sites, Charlotte Trimble and Mildred Lotts.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Doris; three daughters, Pam Hicks (Garry), Donna Thomas, and Denise Tedder (Terry); five grandchildren, Chris Martin, Courtney Cavendish (Scott), Brandon Garrett (Nicole), Jennie Kurucz (Gary) and Kelly Garrett; five great-grandchildren, Emaleigh and Micaela Garrett, Gavin Morris and Tanner Redford (Kelly) and Gary Allen Kurucz; two nephews; and three nieces.

The family wishes to thank Kindred Hospice members for their constant and loving care of Glenn. Special thanks to Janine, Jennifer, Michelle, Brittany and Linda.

Glenn served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a Virginia State Trooper from 1954 to 1971, Director of Transportation for Albemarle County Schools from 1971 to 1976, and worked for the Virginia Corrections Department, Western Regional office in Roanoke from 1976 until he retired in 1987.

He was a member of Southview United Methodist Church. Glenn was a life member of the Charlottesville Elks Lodge #389, serving as Exalted Ruler from 1973 to 1974. He was also a member of the Virginia State Police Alumni, and a life member of the DAV Chapter #3.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, October 15, 2018, at Oakey’s North Chapel with Pastor Warren Carswell officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to the Kindred Hospice, 1318 Plantation Road, Roanoke, VA 24012 or to the Roanoke Valley SPCA.
