PRAGUE, Sept. 4 (UPI) —Ladislav Novomesky, a Slovak Communist poet and politician who spent years in jail in the Stalinist period as an alleged traitor and spy, died in Bratislava today, the Ceteka press agency said. He was 72 years old.
Mr. Novomesky, a member of the Central Committee of the regional Slovak Communist Party, was one of the most prominent poets of Czechoslovakia. In 1944, he was considered one of the intellectual leaders of the Slovak uprising against the Germans.
Ten years later, the poet, a member of the Communist Party, was tried by a Communist court for alleged espionage and high treason. He received a 10‐year prison term, but was released two years later. He was considered fully rehabilitated in 1963.
The press agency said Mr. Novomesky would be buried in a state funeral in Bratislava next week.
