Thomas married four times in his life -- losing the first three wives in death.
Thomas first married Mary "Polly" E. Veazey (1800-1828) on July 2, 1822 at the age of 22 in Hancock County, GA. (According to Whaley's grandson, while he was an overseer for Gov. William Rabun, he met and married Gov. Rabun's 1st cousin, Mary Veazey). By Mary he had 3 children, losing Mary at the birth of their third child: Eli.
1) Eliza Jane Whaley Medlock(1822-1872);
2) William Sanders Whaley (1827-1900);
3) Eli Lafayette Whaley (1828-1828).
Mary Veazey Whaley died in childbirth of their third son Eli, on March 10, 1828. (Eli died a month later).
Thomas then married at the age of 28 my ggg-grandmother, Mary Eppes Moss Smith (1805-1848) in Greene County, Georgia on October 21, 1828. (My ggg-grandmother was a widow of William C. Smith (1764-1826) with three sons). Thomas and Mary had 5 children together:
1) Franklin Lucilius Whaley (1829-1908);
2) Martha Moss Whaley Colbert (1831-1855);
3) Thomas Jefferson Whaley (1833-1911);
4) Mary Judson Whaley Beddo (my gg-grandmother)(1835-1884);
5) Sarah W. Whaley (1836-?);
Very shortly after my ggg-grandmother Mary died in 1848 he married a third time at the age of 47 on March 23, 1848 a Mary Morris (1820-1858) in Hancock County, Georgia. Thomas and Mary Morris had 5 children:
1) James Taylor Whaley (1849-1908);
2) Cortez Pizarro Whaley (1850-1893);
3) Juinne Whaley (1851-?);
4) Clara Whaley (1852-?);
5) Cora Frances Whaley Conyers (1854-?);
After Mary Morris Whaley died in 1858, Thomas married a fourth and last time at the age of 59 on December 30, 1859 a Susan Myric Ivey (1827-1875) and had two more children:
1) Ella Marietta Corilla Whaley McCord(1861-1947); and
2) Benjamin "Bennie" Franklin Whaley (1865-1870).
Thomas died at the age of 71 in Hancock County, Georgia, on February 22, 1872. I would love to communicate with any descendants of my family and gladly welcome additional information, burial locations, and/or corrections on the above information. Of course, and most importantly, I am always looking for pictures of my family.
