FIRTH - Earl Humphreys, 84, Firth, died in an Idaho Falls convalescent home Monday morning, December 12, 1983, following a prolonged illness.
He was born December 5, 1899 at Paris, the son of Samuel and Ida May Smedley Humphreys. The family moved to Shelley when he was an infant. He grew up there and attended Shelley schools. He entered the U.S. Army in 1918 and served in France. Upon his discharge in 1919 he returned to the Firth area where he was employed by various farmers. On April 21, 1920, he married Beulah Grace Womack. She died in 1935.
On October 2, 1943, he married Gertrude Genevieve Backus in Blackfoot. Following their marriage they made their home in Firth where he was employed as custodian of Firth High School. He retained that position for 43 years, until he retired.
He was a member of the LDS Church and held the office of high priest. He had been secretary of his high priests group and was also a home teacher. He was a member of the American Legion and World War I Veterans. He served in the American Legion as post and district commander.
Survivors include his wife, Genevieve, of Idaho Falls; three sons, Lewis E. Humphreys of Santa Monica, California, Keith Owen Humphreys of Ririe, and Ronald Dee Humphreys of Memphis, Tennessee; two daughters, Mrs. Darlene Bolander of Firth and Mrs. Annette Brown of Ririe; 19 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; a twin sister, Mrs. Pearl Womack of Shelley, a sisters, Mrs. Golda Chamberlain of Yakima, Washington; and one brother, Loren Humphreys of Hammett. He was preceded in death by one son.
Funeral services are scheduled Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Firth Stake Center with Bishop Merlin Holley officiating. Interment will be in the Firth Cemetery.
