Daniel C. Shields was born November 6, 1960 in Omaha, Nebraska to Chuck and Joan (Donohoe) Shields. They lived in Minden, Iowa until they moved to O’Neill, Nebraska in 1966. Dan attended District 9 school north of O’Neill until completing the 8th grade. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic High School and graduated in 1979.
Shortly after graduation, Dan moved to Sun Prairie Wisconsin to attend a truck driving course. He traveled the country hauling everything from livestock to merchandise. Dan enjoyed seeing the countryside and meeting new people but his farming roots and future wife were calling him home.
Dan and Luann (Peter) were married September 28, 1985 in O’Neill, Nebraska. It was there they started their family. They were blessed with three sons; Chuck in 1987, Rob in 1989, and Dave in 1993. They continued to farm and ranch, raising all different types of livestock including cattle, horses and pigs.
Dan’s favorite hobbies include horses; of which he bought his first horse in 8th grade, attending his children’s events, playing farm on the floor with his children and grandchildren, and working with his family. He enjoyed working in the shop, creating everything from decorative windmills, crosses, tools, or whatever was needed at the time. When out of town very rarely did Dan pass a farm machinery dealership without stopping to drive through.
Dan is survived by his wife of 33 years, Luann; his children, Chuck Shields and wife Shayla of O’Neill, NE, Rob Shields of Lincoln, NE, Dave Shields and wife Mary of O’Neill, NE; grandchildren, Terrick and Brezlyn Shields; aunt, Carolyn Donohoe of O’Neill, NE; two brothers, Tom Shields and Wife Peggy of O’Neill, NE, Mike Shields of O’Neill, NE; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
