Samuel Ross Stewart, age 85, Rogersville, Alabama passed away at home surrounded by those who loved him on Saturday, December 16, 2017. Ross, as he was known to family and friends, was born May 22, 1932 in Robbinsville, North Carolina. He loved to share stories of his childhood growing up as one of nine children. He made frequent trips back to his beloved mountains to see family and pursue his passion for trout fishing. He had a quiet sense of humor, and his greatest pleasure was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ross served in the United States Navy, and was a Veteran of the Korean War, serving aboard the U.S.S. Roosevelt (CV-42), and the U.S.S. Oriskany (CV-34). He was employed by Reynolds Metals for 30 years, and was a member of Rogersville Church of Christ. Mr. Stewart's visitation will be held at Rogersville Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM, with the funeral service immediately following. Alex Bayes and Windell Gann will be officiating. Pallbearers will be Sam Williams, Freddie McConnell, Matthew Davis, Will Stewart, Daniel Tucker and Blake Tidwell. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Katy Stewart; brothers, Russell Stewart, Henry Stewart, Gerald Stewart, Perry Stewart, Ray Stewart; sister, Betty Stewart Small.
