Obituary

LANCASTER, SC ~ Mr. Glenn Watts, 89, passed away at his home Friday, October 5, 2018. He was born July 1, 1929 in Lancaster, a son of the late Richard A. Watts and Queen Baker Watts. He was the husband of Peggy Rowell Watts. Mr. Watts loved fishing, camping, gardening and yard work. He helped organize the first Boy Scout Troop in Buford, Troop 82. For over 40 years, he was in the life insurance business and was a Manager at Pilot Life Insurance Company and Vice President at Kanawha Insurance Company. Mr. Watts served on the History Commission for Lancaster County. He was a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church, where he served as co-teacher of an adult bible class, and as Lay Leader.

Mr. Watts was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason in Wannamaker Lodge No. 329 at Tradesville, S.C. on July 16, 1955. He served that lodge as Worshipful Master in 1959. In 1969 he was appointed and served as District Deputy Grand Master of the 24th Masonic District. He was a Past High Priest of Keystone Chapter No. 19, Royal Arch Masons, Past Illustrious Master of Witherspoon Council No. 33, and Past Commander of Lancaster Commandery No. 19, Knights Templar. He also served as District Deputy (5th District) to the Illustrious Grand Master of the Grand Council of Cryptic Masons of South Carolina. Glenn was a member of the Grand Convention of Anointed High Priests of South Carolina; Palmetto Priory No. 54, Knights of the York Cross of Honor; Thrice Illustrious Masters Council of South Carolina; South Carolina Council No. 20, Knight Masons; Palmetto York Rite College No. 70; Cana Tabernacle No. 49, Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests; and Lancaster Council No. 146, Allied Masonic Degrees. He was the Right Eminent Grand Commander of the Knights Templar of South Carolina. In 2014, members of the Flat Rock Masonic Lodge No. 178 and Wannamaker Lodge No. 329 established the Glenn R. Watts Masonic Light Award in honor of Mr. Watts for his many contributions to Masonry. This award is presented each year to a deserving member elected by members of the 24th District Square & Compass Club. He was awarded the Sovereign York Rite College of North America Service award in 2015.

Mr. Watts is survived by his wife of 64 years, Peggy R. Watts; a son, Richard Watts and his wife, Tammy; a daughter-in-law, Laura Watts; four grandchildren, Nolan Watts (Cameron), Nick Watts (Namrata), Megan Watts and fiancé, Scott, and Amanda Watts; a great grandchild, Caroline Watts; a sister-in-law, Shirley Watts; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Watts was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Philip Watts; three brothers, J.W. Watts, Ray Watts, and Frank Watts; and three sisters, Willie Mae Spanski, Grace Bowers, and Ruth Faulkenberry.

The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mr. Watts will be 4:00 pm Thursday, October 11th, 2018 at Tabernacle United Methodist Church by Rev. Larry King. Burial with Masonic Rights will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 pm Thursday, October 11th, 2018 at Tabernacle United Methodist Church fellowship hall and suggest memorial contributions be made to Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 5908 Tabernacle Road, Lancaster, SC 29720 or the charity of one’s choice.
