James was the son of Joseph Croft and Nancy Carter who immigrated to America fall, 1817, leaving him at age 7 due to ill health, living with his grandparents James Carter and Margaret Wills, both of Carperby, until their death and inherited their farm when they died 1835, the same year he married to Margaret Rider (1813-1877), (per letters between James and Croft cousins in VT). Margaret was the dau. of Ralph Rider (1786-1838) and Elizabeth Moreland of Swineside. Ralph's brother, John, had immigrated to America, none found in 1850 census.
