Ralph Clint Hughes
May 19, 1946 - October 3, 2018

Ralph Clint Hughes, age 72 of Talbott, woke up in the loving arms of Jesus, his “Lord and Master” Wednesday, October 3, 2018. A native of St. Charles, VA; Ralph moved to Hamblen County after returning from two tours in Vietnam. He served one tour for his younger brother and best friend, Danny Hughes.

He was surrounded by immediate family who admired and adored him. He had fought a courageous battle with heart disease since age 49. He was known for his life of kindness and integrity. All who knew Ralph had somehow been touched by his “Love for Jesus”. He was a soldier who walked close to his Lord. He was a member of the former Crossroads Baptist Church, but his health had kept him from attending a number of years. Rev. Raymond Perry’s visits were always so happy!

Ralph was commemorated for his Navy Military Police service through the Navy Unit Combat and also many other medals and badges for heroism. Upon returning from Vietnam, his first job was in Morristown, as a City Police officer, who at that time walked the beat in downtown Morristown. He partnered with former Police Chief Joel Seal; this was in his blood and he was passionate about his integrity. He was later elected constable and served with Hamblen County Sheriff’s Department for several years, both part-time and full-time. He was a 1979 graduate of the Donelson Police Academy. His law enforcement career spanned over two decades. His primary job was a security officer at Enka, BASF, and Lenzing Fibers for about 20 years. He was best known as a peacemaker, very unselfish, with a smile, a positive outlook, and a close walk with Jesus, always looking up!

Ralph was preceded in death by his father and mother, Clint Hughes and Mattie Hughes; his father was also a police officer in Pennington Gap, VA; infant sister preceded him named Lorena; younger brother, Danny Hughes who was his best confidant; much loved father and mother-in-law, Glen and Ollie White; and sister-in-law, Glenda McDaniel Holt.

Ralph loved everybody everyday of his life. He was so selfless with any possession he had and always said his greatest joy in life was spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Patricia Ann (White) Hughes; he leaves behind children, Brian (Heather) Hughes of Smyrna, TN, Chad (Kathy) Hughes of Morristown, and April (Kevin) Gorden of Russellville, TN; grandchildren, Shalee and Skyler Gordon, Jacob and Madison Hughes; many special friends including, Ruth Wyatt and Inez Garland. Ralph’s siblings are Charlie (Barbara) Hughes of Woodway, VA, Jo Ann Webb-Baker of Kingsport, TN, and Christine (Junior) Large of Greenback, TN.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, October 5, 2018 at Alder Funeral Home. Funeral Service will follow at 7:00 p.m. Military Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Hamblen Memory Gardens as he was very patriotic. Pallbearers will be Kenneth Marshal, Scotty Russell, Kevin Gordon, Kenny Holt, Cody Baugh, and Ben Gilbert.

Flowers are welcome but if you prefer to make a donation in Ralph’s name, please do so to Mt. Bethel Freewill Baptist Church at 403 Mt. Bethel Rd., Greeneville, TN 37745
