Stephen Wells Ashby

Stephen Wells Ashby was born November 30, 1884 in Lake Shore, Utah, Utah to William Ashby, Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth Markham Ashby. He moved to Vernal in July1900. Wells was six feet tall and weighed 145 lbs. His eyes were blue and his hair dark. He was a farmer, stockman and mercantile clerk. He was the deputy assessor of Uintah County.

In the spring of 1908 Wells and Zina moved to Altonah, Utah, which was on the Ute Indian reservation. They proved up a homestead where in 1911. They moved back to Lapoint. The family moved back to Vernal in 1920 and lived on the James Hacking ranch in Ashley Canyon. In September 1923 they moved to Maeser Ward into the John G. Hacking's home north of the James Hacking home, and finally bought the home.

All of their six children were born in Vernal, but the family lived in Altonah and Lapoint part of that time. Their children are: Rulon Wells, Harold Clive, Thora, Sara, Ward Hacking and Anna.

Wells delivered coal from Coal Mine Basin to people, also eggs, milk and cream, to earn a little money to support the family.

Wells loved a good string of horses and a good wagon. In those days, if a man had a good team, wagon and plow, possibly an old harrow, he was pretty well set up. It seemed he would rather clear the ground than stay on it after it was cleared up. Then he would go to another place. He loved pioneer life.

Wells was a hard worker. He always picked up the biggest shovel and never did let anyone outdo him. When he was haying, at $2.50 a day for a pitcher in the field. The stacker got $3.00 Wells always stacked. It was a good stack and everybody wanted Wells to stack their hay.

Wells and Zina had a modest home, but did have a square piano and a grandfather clock. They had a four room house. with an outhouse toward the barn.

They both had good singing voices. Wells sang bass and Zina sang alto. They often sang duets together.
