George "Dutch" Hoffman
July 13, 1922 – June 17, 2022

Dutch passed away just shy of his 100th birthday with family by his side.
He was born July 13, 1922, in Germany, just outside of Berlin, and moved to America before he was two years old.
He grew up in Blackwell with his father Andrew, mother Eva, sister Ermagard, and brother William.

Dutch joined the United tatesS Navy during WWII. He worried that if he didn't join, he would be drafted and have to fight his family back in Germany. He served from 1942-1945 and often talked about working on the Whippoorwill, a decommissioned minesweeper from WWI that was re-commissioned as a tugboat hauling supplies all over the Pacific, including Australia, Philippines, and New Guinea.
Dutch felt that tug boats were important, because they provided supplies necessary to support war efforts. He was always willing to talk about his time in the war, from battling typhoons in the open ocean to watching Japanese warplanes kamikaze neighboring ships.

When he returned home from the war, he found work at the CC Camp at Scott Lake near Three Lakes, where he worked for about a year, earning $1/day.
While working at the CC Camp, his family moved to Goodman, WI; he joined them and began working at the Goodman Mill.
In the early days, Dutch would provide food for his family by hunting and fishing, which he loved. He was an avid outdoorsman and was one of the first people in Goodman to own a snowmobile.

Dutch married Vergil Jacobson on September 20th, 1946, in Muskegon, Ill.
They had two daughters together, Diane and Deborah.

Dutch was preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Eva;
sister Ermagard;
brother William;
wife Vergil;
and daughters Diane and Deborah.

He leaves behind grandsons: Chad (Heather) Ebert of Green Bay, WI and Scott (Kelly) Ebert of Columbus;
special niece Cheryl (Pat) Toedte of Goodman, WI
and great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Chase, and Jett Ebert of Green Bay, WI.

Burial will be at the Glenwood Cemetery in Goodman on August 13th, starting at 10 am, with a gathering to follow at the Trails End in Goodman.
