Alfred is the son of John and Polly Casey. He married Salinda Tucker, daughter of John A. and Lucinda (Arrington) Tucker, on 22 Sep 1854 in Madison County, Arkansas. On 6 Nov 1862 Alfred Casey enlisted as a private in the Union Army. When he enlisted, he stated that he was 27 years old, six feet in height, fair complexion, blue eyes, and black hair. He was with Company A, First Arkansas Cavalry and was taken prisoner at the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas. He was apparently exchanged for Confederate soldiers. He later manned the howitzers at Fayetteville, Arkansas. He and Salinda are the parents of twelve children: Robert, John, James, William, Lucinda, Nancy Ellen, Mary Frances, Susan, Flora Louise, Thomas, Jason, and Walter Marion Casey.
