Gene never met an animal he didn't like--a ride through the local supermarket on his childhood horse was the stuff of family legend.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia McIlhenny Fowler, his two children and their spouses, and his grandson and granddaughter.
Known for his quick wit, his irreverent one-liners will be missed.
The family will conduct a private memorial. They ask that in lieu of flowers, friends and family give to the VBSPCA and/or Autism Speaks in Gene's name.
