Captain, C.S.A. Conn was educated in Kentucky under future Confederate general John Magruder. When the war came, Conn enlisted in the 3rd Kentucky Cavalry, C.S.A., and was soon commissioned captain. He was captured and imprisoned at Johnson's Island while serving with General John Morgan on his raid through Ohio and Indiana. His last military assignment was as escort for President Jefferson Davis and other Confederate officials as they fled from Richmond to Georgia. After the war Conn returned to Kentucky to resume farming, but soon moved to Arkansas to take up cotton planting. He moved to St. Louis and entered the real estate business. One of the properties he acquired was Ulysses S. Grant's White Haven farm, where he would spend his retirement raising horses. He was also involved in the development of Forest Park.
