William "Bill" Melton, 82, of the Givens Estates community, passed away following a brief illness at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals on Sunday October 27, 2013. A native and lifelong resident of Buncomb County, he was a son of the late Bascom and Maude Ingle Melton. Bill was of the Methodist faith and served in the US Army during the Korean conflict. He was the founder of Asheville Hose & Equipment, which he owned and oerated for 26 years, until selling the business and retiring 2007. He was a member of the Biltmore Masonic Lodge # 446, the Asheville Valley of Scottish Rite and the Oasis Shrine. The Lodge will open at 3:00 PM on Saturday.
Bill is survived by his wife of 62 years, Pauline "Polly" Field Melton; one daughter Mary Melton Hale and her husband, Jim, of Asheville; three sisters, Marie Bates of Candler, Eileen Conner of Candler and Elaine Metcalf and her husband, Sam, of Webster, TX; two grandchildren, Ashley Miller and her husband, Joe and Kevin Hale and his wife, Kori, all of Sylva; four great-grandchildren, Aubrie and Jake Miller and Kennadi and Kaleb Hale, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Juliam with Reverand Wes Sharpe officiating.
