Jackie James Woods, 79, of De Leon, passed away September 23, 2018.
Born July 18, 1939, in England, Arkansas, Jack was the oldest of eleven children.

Jack left home at thirteen years old to be a cowboy. He rode for the largest ranches in Arizona, California and Montana. When Jack was old enough he joined the United States Navy in 1957 and served on the USS Nicholas DD/DDE449, the most decorated destroyer in the United States Navy history. Following his service in the Navy, he continued to pursue a long and devoted life of ranching, horse training and hauling horses for Polo players throughout the country and Canada.

Jack’s most important accomplishment was the designing, building and management of the 400 acre Brazo Norte Ranch in the Coachella Valley for owner Fred Mannix of Canada. Together with Ann Clipstone, they brought the celebrated ranch to the forefront of Polo ranches in the Desert of California. Some fifty to sixty horses were trained every year by six to eight cowboys over the period of fifteen years. Jack also served as a technical advisor for the production of the Lonesome Dove Series while in Canada.

Jack retired to Texas to settle his own ranch in 2007 outside of De Leon.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Woods; sons, Anthony Woods, Gary Woods and David Woods; one brother; and two sisters.
Jack had many friends and was loved by all who knew him.
