Joseph Nicolau Santos, Resident of San Leandro

It is with great sadness the family of Joe Santos announces his passing on August 8, 2018. He found eternal peace at his home in San Leandro surrounded by his family.

Joe was born in Cedros, Flores in the Azores Islands of Portugal on June 6, 1935, to Constantino and Maria Valadao dos Santos. His father passed when he was 11 and Joe took on the leadership role of the family. He, along with his mother and younger brothers, immigrated to the United States in 1954.

Joe worked as printer and journalist for a Portuguese newspaper before joining the United States Navy in 1957, proudly serving until 1963. After the Navy, Joe went to work for Wells Fargo Bank, where he started as a proof of deposit operator and 35 years later, ended his career as the Vice-President responsible for Wells Fargo's payroll.

Joe was extremely active in the community and volunteered with many non-profits. He was one of the founding board members of the Southern Alameda Youth Soccer League. He also served on the boards of St. John's School, Castro Valley Soccer Club, Sociedade Divino Espirito Santo de Alvarado, St. Alphonsus Church, and St. Vincent De Paul. Joe had a deep Catholic faith and was involved in many church activities serving as lector, Eucharistic minister, and in the ministry of the sick.

He volunteered for the San Jose Earthquakes and at the 1994 World Cup. He coached many youth soccer teams in the East Bay, making a positive impact and inspiring countless youth to play his favorite sport. Joe was also an avid fitness enthusiast, celebrating his 50th birthday by running in the Hayward Half-Marathon. He participated in many other races with his daughter at his side.

Joe was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and is survived by his wife of 58 years, his daughter, his son, two grandchildren, his younger brothers, and many nephews and nieces. Joe was known for his easy-going personality and warm smile. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the great fortune to know him.
