Mary Louise Osborn Evans
1928 - 2007
Private family burial services were held Thursday, May 10, 2007 at Greenlawn Memorial Park for Mary Louise Osborn Evans who passed away from cancer on Saturday, May 5, 2007. Lou Evans was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who took great pride in her much loved family. Born August 5, 1928 in La Porte, Indiana to F. Leslie and Rose Osborn, Lou was preceded in death by her loving husband, David J. Evans, M.D. She is survived by her three daughters whom she "loved with all her heart", Sandi Evans Visconti, Stacy Evans Arakelian, and Kay Zauner, along with son-in-laws: Pat Visconti, Alan Arakelian, and Dan Zauner, grandchildren: Skyler Visconti, Tiffany and Austin Sneed, and Mackenzie and Mackaylee Zauner, and sister-in-law, Marie Evans Smith, niece, Susan Teagarden, husband, Tom and sons: Thomas, Adam and Matthew. Lou graduated from La Porte High School in 1946, La Porte, Indiana. She was president of Tri-Hi-Y and Red Cross, played trumpet in the band, and was a lifeguard at summer camps in Michigan. She was the featured trumpet soloist in an all male jazz band for 2 years; later she was with the Indianapolis Symphony Tour under Savitsky. Without her parents' knowledge, Lou independently became a licensed pilot in 1946 at 17 and then attended Stephens College Aviation School in Columbia, Missouri with her parents' blessing. The summer of 1950, Lou and her roommate traveled throughout Europe for 4 months. In 1951, Lou graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Economics and Wesley Nursing as a Registered Nurse; she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. On June 23, 1951, Lou married David J. Evans at St. Paul's Episcopal Parish in La Porte, Indiana by Fr. Paul Hawkins of St. James, Chicago just before David's internship at Evanston Hospital, Evanston, Illinois. In 1959, they moved to Bakersfield and later became members of St. Paul's Episcopal Parish. Lou was active in the Junior League of Bakersfield as treasurer for 2 years and then president. She was also actively involved with the founding board of Meals on Wheels, the Tennis Patrons as president, Saturday Adventurers as a volunteer, and the Kern County Medical Auxiliary as a board member and secretary. Lou was one of the visionaries of the California Living Museum serving as a 14 year board member and as a vice president. Being a docent at CALM for 24 years since it opened, Lou enjoyed working with the wonderful animals. She played an integral part in bringing the Monterey Bay Aquarium to CALM three times. Words cannot express how deeply grateful our family is for Dr. Ravi Patel, a kind, caring, exceptional human being. A special thank you to CBCC employees; they touched our lives as only angels do. Mom was blessed with so many treasured friends and had a special place in her heart for the dogs and cats that were there for her. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the California Living Museum (CALM) and St. Paul's Episcopal Parish in her memory. Instead of a memorial, visit CALM, think of Lou, and enjoy the animals she loved so much! Mary Louise Osborn Evans "Lou" ~ "Mary Lou" August 5, 1928 – May 5, 2007
