Educator. Born to Jack and Frieda (nee Shapiro) Katz. Dr. Katz received a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1966 and an M.A. in psychology in 1968 from Arizona State University and an Ed.D in educational psychology from the University of Georgia in 1975.

Dr. Katz began his career at Auburn University Montgomery as an assistant professor of psychology in 1973. He later became full professor and began work in 1993 as Assistant Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs. In 1996, Dr. Katz was awarded the Faculty Service Award by the university. He retired from AUM in 2007 as Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Professor Emeritus, Department of Psychology.

Dr. Katz was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force in 1965 and was on active duty status from 1967 to 1971 and in 1981 when he completed Air Command and Staff College as a distinguished graduate at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery. He served as a USAF Reserve officer at Maxwell AFB in the Air Force Historical Research Agency until 1993 when he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Following his retirement from AUM in 2007, Dr. Katz began volunteer work for the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System in Montgomery in the department of Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine Services. He was recognized in April 2011 for his contribution of 1000 hours of volunteer service in 2009 and 2010. Dr. Katz's earlier volunteer service includes working with disabled children at the City of Saint Jude in Montgomery.

Dr. Katz was a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honorary society and the American Psychological Association. He was also the co-holder of a patent for inventing an artificial arm and hand for use by individuals missing a limb.

Dr. Katz died at home at the age of 67 after a sudden brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 42 years Millie Katz, nee Luosey, his daughter Amy Bonn, his son-in-law David Bonn, his grandson Henry Bonn, his aunt Beatrice Shapiro, and his cousins-in-law Dick and Marylu Lane. He was preceded in death by his son John Robert Katz. The memorial service was held in Room 230 of the University Center at Auburn University Montgomery at noon on Friday, June 3, 2011. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made toThe Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
